What are wood pellets? What are the benefits? Are they renewable? How are they delivered?

Wood pellets are renewable and sustainable

In energy terms, renewables are those forms of energy, generated from natural resources, which can be replenished naturally and sustainably. These include non-carbon technologies such as solar, hydro and wind power, as well as carbon-neutral technologies such as biomass.

Wood is a carbon neutral fuel

Wood is a form of solid biomass. Burning wood arguably produces no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions as the carbon dioxide released by its combustion is equivalent to that fixed by growth in trees during their lifetime. The same amount of carbon dioxide would eventually be released if wood was left to rot in the open or buried in land fill.

Wood fuel vs fossil fuel

When sourced from sustainably managed forests wood fuel is recognised as having far lower net lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions than fossil fuel equivalents. Using wood fuel also goes towards reducing the UK's dependency on dwindling fossil fuel resources such as coal, gas and oil.

Supporting the local economy

Wood fuel production provides forestry and timber processing enterprises with a major opportunity for diversification, offering a ready market outlet for low grade timber products such as chipwood and sawmill co-products. This can also lead to the creation of local jobs for local people.

Our policy and practices

Duffield Wood Pellets fully endorse the ongoing development of a sustainable biomass fuel infrastructure and supply chain within the UK. Our philosophy and operations are in accord with the UK Government's Renewable Energy Strategy, which includes a commitment to meeting a target of 15% of UK energy coming from renewable sources by 2020.

By sourcing timber from local, managed, forestry sources to produce fuel to provide heat for consumers in our immediate geographical region we aim to keep the carbon mileage associated with distribution as low as possible.

All timber accepted into stock is checked for FSC compliance or a valid felling licence. We are currently finalising FSC accreditation for our wood pellets, which in turn will ensure CPET compliance, in line with UK Government timber purchasing guidelines.

In addition we have adopted an enlightened energy policy which promotes awareness throughout our organisation of ways to help reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions through the application of simple and sensible energy saving measures.

Forests are the lungs of the world, by regulating climate, water cycles and soil erosion they benefit our environment. Good forestry management and replanting are vital.

Trees have a natural lifecycle and on reaching maturity can be felled to make way for the next generation. Felled trees are converted at the sawmill and moved to timber yards.

Processed timber is used to manufacture a diverese range of products. Intelligent use of sawmill and manufacturers' residues allows the production of wood pellets.
